July 2003 - FOOTBALL ALBERTA REPORT - By Brian Fryer

Here is a re-cap of results from the summer and fall for you amateur football fans out there.  Highlights of notable Eskimo sons: Dan Bass’s son was a LB on the Provincial winning team, the Ardrossan Bisons at the Tier 4 level (based on school size), Emilio Fraietta’s boy, was the MVP for the junior league at the Edmonton Metro High School league out of Archbishop O’Leary and Pete Lavorato’s boy made the roster of the U of AB Golden bears as a rookie (big feet, big future, just like his dad).  Pete Lavorato, Head Coach at Archbishop Jordan, had a great year getting to the final in the Tier 3 championship game but lost out to Taber.

Prodigal Skyhawk

In the year 2000 the St. Albert high school skyhawks were lead to the Edmonton Metro Carr Conference Championship in football by several special athletes none the least of which was their Grade 11 quarterback Matt Connell.  Over the off season Matt was offered something no one in Alberta had ever received before and that was a full scholarship to finish out his high school at one of the most prestigious prep-schools in the U. S. - Kent School in Connecticut.

Kent School is well know for its academic and athletic successes and is school to the children of some of the most prominent business people in the Eastern Seaboard.  As their starting QB he lead Kent on an amazing journey which culminated on Nov 29 as Kent won their first ever New England Class “A” Championship with a 42-7 victory.

Not bad for a St. Albert kid!
